Vegas Mischief by robertalonso

I love Las Vegas. You need the right mind set heading to Las Vegas. It can be whatever you want to be, kind of a Disneyland for grownups. You can find the $5.00 all you can eat (and they mean it) buffets, or pop for $2,000 on dinner (including a rare vintage, of course). You can spend the afternoon at The Venetian, walking through a gallery of some of the worlds most famous and valuable art; or you can head to Fremont Street and enjoy the county fair on steroids atmosphere. Play with the dolphins and tigers at The Mirage, joust at Excalibur. The entertainment in the evening is world class, and covers every taste imaginable.

But, cash or credit? Some important things to consider. First, Las Vegas is unique in that the casino/strip/Fremont Street areas are all tourists. People do actually live in Las Vegas, but not near these areas. Las Vegas is also primarily about money. Gambling, slots, sportsbook… money, money, money. Where there are lots of tourists, and money on the mind, there are also predators. People who want to help themselves to a bit of your money.

For this reason, your peace of mind, I recommend plastic. Carry as little cash as possible, you really won't need it. Las Vegas is all about separating you from your money, legitimately, so there isn't any thing you want, including the ice cream on your way through Caesar's shops (a definite 'must see'), that you cannot buy with your credit card. Also, there are no bonuses for using cash, no cash discounts, no benefit to you as the consumer.

You can slip your credit card, one or two is all you need, in a safe place on your body. In your front pants pocket, for instance, not in your back pocket where your wallet normally would be. A trick I use for real peace of mind when planning for any vacation, I rarely carry much cash. Instead, I have a '”vacation allowance” of cash I have set aside. I put this cash into my credit cards, pre-paying the amount I would have taken in cash. Usually, for me, this creates a credit balance on my card… so that when I whip out the plastic, I know I'm actually just spending my own cash. I also won't trigger the “cash advance” interest fees if I use an ATM, because I'm pulling out my money, not the bank's. I just keep track of when I get to the level of money I put in, and have stepped over into using 'credit'.

Using plastic benefits, as well, because if your cash is stolen or missing, that's pretty much “it”. If your card vanishes, your issuer is like a bulldog protecting you from someone else using it. I had my Visa card hacked (unrelated to the trip, someone hacked a shopping site and accessed my card number…) while I was in Las Vegas, and my bank disabled it immediately. But, they had a new card in my hands overnight. Bottom line, you can lose your cash, but you can't lose with plastic.

A potential money saver… if you are making a purchase that is a bit expensive, see about having the merchant ship it to your home state. This will often times allow the merchant to eliminate charging you sales tax. Check out the cost of the shipping vs. the actual tax, but depending on the item, it could help the pocketbook. And, it saves you having to make space in your suitcase with airlines being so sensitive about weight and space these days!

Another quick tip… Las Vegas can be a wonderful place to visit. But, the casinos are very good at subliminal marketing. When inside, there are no doors, windows, no way to tell what time it is “in the real world”; and they are set up to lull you into the fun and temptation of the “game”. Just remember, it's not a “game”, it is money, your money, and they are experts at seducing you out of it at the tables and slots. Just be aware of that, and stick to your own set limits, decided before you go, not standing in the middle of the casino.

Most importantly… it's your vacation! Have fun!
